SEVILLA COME TO THE HELIODORO

Third placed team come to the Heliodoro: Tenerife v Sevilla 21/11/2009: 17.00
Sevilla are riding high in the league with seven wins and a draw from ten games. We face them without Alfaro who cannot play due to a clause in
his loan deal from them.
Segunda División Celta de Vigo beat us in both legs of our Copa de Rey match: Tenerife v Celta de Vigo 10/11/2009: 0-1 (aggregate 1-3)
In the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) we entered at this stage and played Celta de Vigo from the Segunda División (when we played the first leg and lost 2-1 they were in one of the relegation places with 7 points from 8 games).
In the first leg in Vigo we went 2-0 down but got an away goal and a much better chance of winning the round when Richi (44m) converted an Ayoze free kick after the Celta goalie failed to intercept it.
I was in Tenerife for the return leg and saw our team put on one of the worst displays for years. We missed several good chances (as did Celta), the worst being Dinei's shot over the bar from two metres out just before he was subsituted 20 minutes into the second half. Trainer
Oltra brought on both Ángel and Nino to try and turn things around but to no avail. When it looked like there might be a chance after Vasco Fernandes of Celta was sent off with 15 minutes to go but with 6 minutes remaining a slip by Ezequiel Luna let the visitors in to score a goal
and we were well and truly out of the cup competition for another year.
This was the worst display I have seen in years from a Tenerife team and the manager and players made no excuses for their dreadful performance when they met the press later in the evening.
I see two points lost against the bottom team (and it could have been all three): Tenerife v Málaga: 07/11/2009: 2-2
I was at this match with my friend Jeff Nixon. We saw my first ever Tenerife match together in 1994 and, whilst I have been to dozens home and away since then he was
now watching the blanquiazules for just the second time.
Tenerife started this game against the bottom of the league team as we hoped. Playing some good football, although Málaga had a few chances, they took
the lead through Román (17m) after a great run down the left by Omar. Then nine minutes later Alfaro (26m)took advantage of a pass by Kome to score
his third goal of the season. We were playing great football and looked to be well in control of the game.
However, a horrible mix up in defence saw Edinho (28m) get an early chance to lessen the deficit, Aragoneses saved it but he netted the rebound as the defence was all at
"sixes and sevens". Málaga then took heart and attacked relentlessly, Aragoneses having to make a great save to touch the ball on to the bar and away to keep our lead intact.
In the second half the visitor continued to play well and Javi López (76m) brought them the point a neutral would probably say they deserved. Indeed they could have got all three if they
had taken all their chances. We also had a few chances but both Alfaro and Nino seemed shot shy compared to last season and you could applaud one reasonable effort from Nino near the end but
last year it would probably have whistled into the back of the net.
I thought that Juanlu played well as trainer Oltra tried him as cover for Marc Bertrán (who has been very much missed during his injury) and Román looked good too
but the outstanding player and Peña Internet Player of the Match was definitely Omar who had a great game and tormented Málaga down the left wing.
They really couldn't handle him and, apart from his great work in creating the first goal, he made the chances we should have taken to put this game out of reach.
A video of the highlights will appear here if I can find one soon. Meanwhile here are some pictures:

The new scoreboard now seems to be funtioning well after a few "teething problems".

The games best player was undoubtedly Omar.

Spreading the message
In this picture I am with my friend Carlos Padrón at Stoke's Britannia Stadium before watching the home team beat West Ham 2-1 on Saturday 17th October, 2009.

Here I am at the top of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) the highest mountain in Wales on a miserable wet day, in strong winds, surrounded by cloud but telling the World that "Somos De Primera"
(We are in the Primera División).
I'm not sure that the man I got to take the picture knew what was going on but he kindly did the job for me.
If anyone else has any Tenerife related photos in unusual places please let me have them to put on this site.

2009-2010 Fixtures
The fixtures for the new season started with an away game in Zaragoza on 30th August with our first home game on 13th September against
Osasuna. There was no game on 6th September as this was an international weekend. I have a page of the complete fixture list (which will be updated with scores, scorers, attendances and links to videos of match highlights)
and, thanks to my friend Carlos Padrón, they are here for easy reference for the moment (dates in blue are midweek games):

and the fixtures for all teams can be seen at:
Remaining away games easy to get to by plane from the UK include Getafe (in Madrid's suburbs - 13th December),
Alméria (17th January, Málaga (28th March), Sevilla (4th April), Atlético de Madrid (25th April), Barcelona (Wednesday - 5th May) and Valencia (last game of the season - 16th May).
Remember that games may change from Sundays or Wednesdays to Saturday or Tuesday to suit television or because opponenets have a Champions League fixture the following week (as Real Madrid do after our
home game with them). Also beware that tickets for games at Real Madrid and Barcelona won't be easy to obtain.

CD Tenerife B are promoted to Segunda B División for the 2009/2010 season
CD Tenerife B have been promoted to the Spanish 2B División. This was due to the relegation due to financial problems of UD Fuerteventura this week who owed
820,000 euros and have been forced to drop a league. As Tenerife B finished last season as the Champions of the Third division they have been
promoted despite losing their play off final.
Clubs n the Segunda B include historic clubs like Real Oviedo and Logrones as well as Universidad de Las Palmas who Cristo Marrero now
plays for.
Thanks to Chris Todd for this news.
Youngsters miss out on promotion to Segunda B (but see good news above): Tenerife B v Sporting Mahon 28/06/2009: 0-1 (1-3 on aggresgate)
Tenerife B, which is effectively the youth team, failed to come through the final game of the play-offs with the win they needed to get promoted to the Segunda B División. In Spain, "reserve" teams can play in
the same pyramid as the first team as long as they don't join them in the same league or overtake them by getting promoted when the main team gets relegated.
In recent years we have played Sevilla Atlético and Real Madrid Castilla in the Segunda División whilst their main teams were in the Primera.
Our own B team was trying to get in to the regionalised four league Segunda B División from the Tercera but lost to a much older and more expereienced Mahon team. Tenerife hit the post
in the first half and played quite well according to friends who were there but they fell away in the second half, playing some long ball football and the better team won.
Still it will be good experience for our younger players and this
reserve team (known as the "cantera" in Spanish which literally means quarry in English). The cantera has provided us with some good players for the
first team in recent years such as Ayoze, Cristo Marrero, Iriome, Ricardo and Vitolo.

PROMOTED !!!!!! : Girona v Tenerife 13/06/2009: 0-1
Tenerife played this vital game at the same time as our three rivals for promotion needing just one point to go up and all three to be sure of staying top of the table
regardless of other results.
Over a thousand of us were there to watch as Dani Kome (40m) scored the goal that clinched promotion for us despite the three other teams all winning.
There are pictures and comments about this match on a special page which you can go to by clicking here and a video of the match is below:
Here's a video showing how we celebrated - if you knew where I was you could see me holding up my "Somos de Primera" scarf at about 8m 30s into the video and a quick view of Carlos a few seconds later:
News about other teams I
support

I watched Stoke beat West Ham 2-1 (both goals from James Beattie - the first a penalty) on Saturday October 17th accompanied by my friend Carlos Padrón, a fellow
Tenerife supporter, and "The Potters" subsequently gained their first away win of the season by beating Tottenham 1-0 at White Hart Lane on Saturday 24th.
In the Carling (League) Cup a team of fringe players were well beaten 4-0 by bottom of the Premiership Portsmouth at their ground.
Then on Saturday 31st October Stoke took a deserved 2-0 lead against Wolves by half-time and then conceded two second half goals to draw 2-2 and lose
their chance to move even higher up the table. They then went to Hull, in the bottom three before the game, on 8th November and took a 1-0 lead before letting in two goals (one in
injury time) to lose another game they should have won - this time I blame the manager's defensive tactics near the end when Abdoulaye Faye was sent off for two bookings (the first of
which was one, as captain of the team, he should have avoided as it was for arguing and petulance).
Wales now await a friendly at home with Scotland on 14th November in the new Cardiff City stadium and then the draw for the 2012 European Championship qualifying.
