The Tenerife Local Government [Cabildo de Tenerife] have a site with information on all aspects of the island including tourist information at:

However, if you want lots of information, pictures and links about Tenerife the best site I have found is that belonging to a Tenerife born resident of Belgium called Julio Rancel:

There is a site for an English language Tenerife based newspaper which publishes an on-line edition fortnightly at:

and two Spanish language papers have internet versions:

If you still have the impression that Tenerife is a large Blackpool but with more sun and bananas, then you may wish to check out the music season of La Orquestra Sinfónica de Tenerife:

or take an interest in some local politics:

If you are interested in walking, Tenerife has some wonderful walks (from very easy to extremely testing) and the scenery is magnificent and very varied. Two books by Noel Rochford - "Landscapes of Tenerife" (ISBN 1-85691-047-4) and "Landscapes of Southern Tenerife and La Gomera" (ISBN 0-948513-28-4) give lots of suggestions.
Don't forget to take your walking boots, etc in case you tackle some of the more strenuous and isolated walks. The pictures below may whet your appetite - I took them on walk number 5 in the Southern Tenerife book. The first is looking across to Mount Teide from Guajara and the second looking back towards Montaña de las Arenas from above Vilaflor.

Finally, avoid drinking the imported Tetley Bitter and try the Cerveza Dorada - there's even an alcohol free version (Dorada sin alcohol) if you are going to watch CD Tenerife in the hire car!
